He started his career clerking for the Honorable Julian I. Jacobs of the United States Tax Court. He then practiced law at Covington & Burling. He later worked at the Office of Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service, where he served as the principal drafter of regulations affecting millions of taxpayers.
Michael J. Karlan received his law degree from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
He holds an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration (emphasis in accounting) from the University of Colorado, where he was valedictorian of his graduating class.
